Give yourself permission to experiment and fail
There's something within yourself that has an interest.
Every single person goes through a thought like this feeling at least once in their lifetime:
I’m done with this job, but I don’t know what else I should be doing.
That being said, just know this: there’s something in yourself that has an interest
It could be an interest in art, in wood-chipping, in music, in software engineering, in bouldering, in graphic design, in writing, in patchwork, etc.
No matter the interest, please find a way to take action in that direction.
It could be interning for someone, working for them for free, reading a book, taking a class.
Try to find a way to get involved as close as possible within that area or subject you have an interest that has been bugging you for a while.
This will give you not only insights, but it will start opening up creative channels.
You will start to meet people, you will start to say things like “oh, this is easy to pick up” or “wow, this is awesome as a hobby but I would never want to do this as a career”.
Clarity comes from engagement… not thought
In other words:
You are not going to figure it out sitting on a couch.
You are not going to figure it out scrolling through instagram on your phone.
You are going to figure it out by getting into some kind of action and giving yourself permission to experiment, giving yourself permission to try things that even might not work… and that is OK.
No matter the result, a constant will always be present: you are gonna learn something, you are going to discover something, you are gonna have a conversation with your environment but most importantly: a conversation with yourself.
Hopefully the questions you had at the beginning of this process will be addressed and most likely new questions will rise about your own motivations.
Final thoughts
Going through this process for a couple of times or for a couple of weeks will provide you with great and invaluable insights : )
All of the benefits from this experiment are not gonna come up if you sit at your desk, and you keep knowing your work isn’t right but you don’t do anything active to actually go find out what that is.
As always, keep collaborating, keep writing, keep learning and building something you're proud of.
Stay safe,
Juan.
